So said Bill Shankly many years ago. Times have changed and I imagine Shanks would never have believed LFC could end up with owners from the US who have brought nothing but turmoil and misery to the club. Even less likely would be the prospect of the club being owned by the Chinese Govt, but it’s looking increasingly likely that it will come to pass. My brain is hurting with trying to follow the takeover news this week, global finance not being by strongest subject, but it’s all quite fascinating. I would only really be happy if the club were bought by the fans, but now is not quite the moment for that, unfortunately. Under the circumstances I guess the China buyout is looking the best option, but it feels very odd.
In the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I still can’t get my head around the idea that my football club is a global commodity. I expect to debate the merits of Rafa versus Woy with a local taxi driver or in the pub round the corner, but it still surprises me that people outside the city are interested in, or even have the knowledge to debate the same, let alone people thousands of miles away who have never driven past Anfield on a wet Monday on their way across the city..
Similarly, I was driving down Penny Lane yesterday and as usual there was someone taking a photo of the street sign. It’s hard to remove it these days, so at least people don’t keep nicking it, but I found myself reflecting on the bizarre nature of the world we live in.
